Treasurer's Office

The Treasurer's Office is a constitutional office that requires an election every four years. The position is limited to two terms in 12 years. The functions of the Treasurer's Office include the following:

  1. Printing and mailing of all real estate, personal, and mobile home taxes for Newton County.
  2. Collection of taxes for all units of government within Newton County
  3. The office is required by statue to collect delinquent taxes through the tax sale process.
  4. The office is required to enter all judgments for personal property in the appropriate records maintained in the office of the Clerk of the Circuit Court.
  5. The office is responsible for honoring requests from mortgage companies and banks for tax obligations for escrow payments.
  6. The office responsible for advising taxing units when government employees fail to pay their property taxes.
  7. The Treasurer serves as an officer on the County Board of Finance. The Treasurer is responsible to deposit, invest and account for all monies entrusted to Newton county government.
  8. The Treasurer is responsible for reconciling of all bank statements thus assuring their accuracy and the safety of county funds.
  9. The Treasurer’s office is responsible for the balancing of surplus tax.

The offices of the Assessor,   Auditor and the Treasurer must work closely together.   Taxpayers are encouraged to use information provided by all offices on the county government website.
